Why Get a Mommy
Makeover with Dr. J?

Pregnancy, childbirth, and the stress of raising children will nearly always change a mother’s appearance to a greater or lesser extent but the group of procedures we call the mommy makeover has become its most powerful solution.
While genetics ensures that no two moms have exactly the same experience, the most frequent complaints of Mommy Makeover patients include:

BREAST SAGGING
that is largely caused by the many changes in the size of the breast during pregnancy and breastfeeding. The inevitable weight gains during pregnancy and weight losses afterward are frequent culprits. Hormonal shifts may also cause parts of a mother’s body to shift and the breasts to engorge in preparation for breastfeeding*, only to decrease in size dramatically by the time lactation is finished.

LOOSE, SAGGING ABDOMINAL SKIN AND FAT
that are similarly caused by the unavoidable increases and decreases in the size of the stomach and pelvic areas connected to pregnancy and childbirth. As you probably know all too well, these changes tend to leave skin stretched out. Healthy exercise and a nutritious low-calorie diet can help a lot. Over time, however, the tummy tuck surgery featured in mommy makeovers often proves to be the only way to eliminate the excess skin and any lingering pockets of fat.

MUSCLE SEPARATION (RECTUS DIASTASIS)
in the abdominal area is experienced by an estimated 60 percent of women after childbirth.** It happens when the two core stomach muscle groups, commonly referred to as the abs or six-pack, separate during and after pregnancy under pressure created by the growing baby inside the mom’s uterus. This may happen more often in mothers who are older, have had children before, are having twins or triplets, and who may have a genetic predisposition to muscle separation. The usual result is a small bulge, aka a pooch or baby bump, in the abdominal area – as well as gastric difficulties in some cases. When muscles remain separated, the abdominal surgery included in a mommy makeover may be the only means of resolving the problem.

What Procedures are Included
in Mommy Makeovers?

Most mommy makeovers involve both tummy tucks and breast surgeries – specifically breast augmentations and breast lifts – often in combination. We’ll start with breast procedures.

Breast
Augmentation

Before work on a mommy makeover breast augmentation begins, Dr. J and a patient will discuss what breast size would be desirable in terms of a proportionate appearance, a physically comfortable fit, and a mom’s lifestyle. The next step is to discuss what kind of breast augmentation would be best for a particular mom’s makeover.

Implant or Fat
Transfer?

Mommy makeover patients who want a notable increase in volume and size will select an implant available in a range of sizes. Moms who are happy with a more modest result, however, may benefit from augmenting the breast with fat transferred from elsewhere in the body. The fat transfer procedure can produce extremely attractive and natural mommy makeover outcomes. There are two important caveats, however: First, the fat transfer technique can only increase the size of breasts by a maximum of one cup size. Second, since the transferred fat is obtained from elsewhere in the body via liposuction, moms with very little body fat are not candidates.

4 Types of Breast Lifts

Breast Lifts

Dr. J begins work on mommy makeover breast lifts, often combined with augmentation, by looking at the patient’s overall situation but also the degree of sagging. He will talk to the patient to find out what kind of outcome is desired
Generally speaking, there are four types of breast lifts used in mommy makeovers:

  • CRESCENT: This mommy makeover breast lift involves an incision in the shape of a crescent made just above the areola. The skin above is removed and the doctor lifts the breast and repositions the areola. The procedure is less invasive than others and involves a more rapid recovery, especially as perfected by Dr. J in his scarless breast lift with breast augmentation.
  • CIRCUMAREOLAR OR “DONUT BREAST LIFT” This is a somewhat more extensive procedure that may be best for mommy makeover patients who have more loose skin. In this surgery, incisions are made around the areola and are then used the remove excess skin and lift the breast. If desired, the size of the areola may also be reduced. Since the procedure is entirely performed on the edge of the darker skin of the areola, scarring is largely hidden. When combined with placing an implant or using transferred fat, this is another form of scarless breast lift with augmentation often included in mommy makeovers.
  • VERTICAL OR “LOLLIPOP BREAST LIFT.” An incision is made in a circle around the areola and is followed by a straight incision down the lower portion of the breast – something like the shape of a lollipop. It may be ideal for mommy makeover recipients with more breast ptosis (sagging) compared to those who would be candidates for crescent or circumareolar breast lifts.
  • WISE PATTERN BREAST LIFT. Often referred to as the inverted T or anchor type of breast lift, this mommy makeover breast lift is used by Dr. J in cases where moms have a larger amount of excess skin to remove and/or more complex issues to address. The technique involves removing skin both vertically and horizontally to defeat sagging while lifting and reshaping the breast. It is generally regarded as ¬the most powerful breast lift for moms who want a dramatic upgrade in their appearance.

Patients should understand that outcomes will vary. Sometimes breasts end up looking fairly similar to their former appearance; in other instances, they will look notably different but greatly improved.
When performing mommy makeovers, Dr. J always uses the latest and best surgical techniques. In some cases, this may include his use of Strattice™, a type of support something like an internal bra Dr. J may also often use for first-time breast augmentations.

Tummy Tucks & Mommy Makeovers

Tummy Tuck (Abdominoplasty)

A mommy makeover tummy tuck removes excess skin and fatty tissue while tightening the abdominal muscles. Too often, moms blame themselves for being unable to regain their pre-pregnancy tummies. In reality, not even the most rigorous exercise and diet regimen can get rid of skin that has become loose following one or more childbirths and/or a significant weight loss. It also cannot address stubborn fat deposits or rectus diastasis, more commonly known as abdominal muscle separation. A well-performed abdominoplasty, however, can.
Mommy makeover tummy tucks generally consist of:

Types of Tummy Tucks
for Mommy Makeovers

MINI-TUMMY-TUCK. This is usually performed for mommy makeover patients who have had only one or two children. In cases where mini tummy tucks are called for, muscle separation is limited to the abs located under the navel. Some skin will also be removed above the navel and below the chest wall but less than in other surgeries.

STANDARD TUMMY TUCK. In this central mommy makeover procedure, skin may be removed going from hip to hip and all separated abdominal muscles will be repaired. It’s important to note that tightening separated muscles is not just a simple matter of suturing them back together. It’s up to the plastic surgeon to know precisely where to place the muscles in relation to each other; Dr. J notes this is one area where the caliber of the plastic surgeon may make a major difference in terms of the outcome.

Mommy Makeover Recovery

Dr. J and his team provide patients with all the information they need to ensure the right kind of healing and will keep track of them over the next several weeks. Since it is comprised of multiple surgeries, recovery time from a mommy makeover will be longer than for other procedures. However, patients will be able to resume their normal sedentary work routines within one to three weeks. It’s important to add that, compared to getting the procedures separately, mommy makeover patients are getting improved and coordinated outcomes while actually reducing downtime and expense.

Is Buttock Augmentation Part of a Mommy Makeover?

It’s not unusual for moms, who have experienced some flattening or loss of shape in the buttocks, to also seek out a Natural Butt Lift®, Dr. J’s optimized version of a standard BBL (Brazilian Butt Lift). However, this procedure is performed separately from a mommy makeover. Regardless, Dr. J will be happy the discuss performing the procedure separately for moms who want to customize their makeover. Some patients also like to add on an arm lift. Finally, Mommy Makeovers are not only for moms but for patients who may have undergone weight fluctuations.
